Require State and/or Federal licenses for service dogs and handlers
The Issue
My heart sank when I saw my daughter placed in danger during what should have been a routine shopping trip. I witnessed Blaze, a well-trained service dog, maintain his calm and protective demeanor amidst unexpected chaos. The situation turned alarming when an untrained dog, unnecessarily brought into the store, attacked Blaze and my daughter, creating a distressing and dangerous scenario. Thankfully, Blaze protected my daughter without reacting aggressively, standing as a testament to his impeccable training and character. However, the incident highlighted an unsettling trend: inadequately trained dogs posing as service animals.
The growing misuse of service dog identifiers, such as vests and patches, allows individuals to broadly access spaces with untrained pets, jeopardizing genuine service animals and their handlers. We have a duty to enforce stricter standards for service animals, starting with mandatory certifications that adhere to both State and Federal guidelines. This includes owner-trained dogs, who must successfully pass the AKC Public Access test before their handlers can rightfully purchase service animal vests or patches. They also should have to apply for a “Learners Permit” for the dogs who are “Service Dogs in Training”
Without regulation, the integrity and safety of both handlers and their service dogs are increasingly at risk. It's pivotal that we institute verified testing and certification processes to rule out inadequately trained animals from outing as service dogs. These measures will uphold the original intent of service animals, ensuring they provide a safe and supportive environment for those who genuinely need them.
Join me in calling for change. Let’s advocate for laws requiring proper certification for service dogs, safeguarding authentic service animals and their handlers. Sign this petition and make your voice heard!
