Dear neighbors,

Thank you to everyone who signed and shared the petition supporting Special Permit review for purpose-built student housing in Medford. In a relatively short period, it has reached approximately 180 signatures, compared with 115 signatures reported for the earlier petition supporting a by-right pathway.

The Council recently considered whether this type of housing should be allowed by right rather than through Special Permit review. If you are willing, please email the Council at ccmembers@medford-ma.gov to:

• Thank members who supported retaining Special Permit review and encourage them to stay with that approach.
• Ask members who supported the by-right pathway to reconsider in light of the strong public response.
• Emphasize that Special Permit review is not a ban on housing. It is a way to balance housing needs with questions about traffic, parking, infrastructure, transit, environmental capacity, public resources, and impacts on surrounding neighborhoods.
• Remind them of the importance of public notice, accessible hearings, and a meaningful opportunity for residents to be heard.
