The Issue

Autism is a diagnosis, and I live every day with what that really means while raising our daughter. People see a piece of paper and think they understand her, but they do not see the communication barriers, the sensory barriers, the educational barriers, the social barriers, and the life skills barriers that can stand in her way. They do not always see the heartache. They also do not always see her joy, her purpose, and everything she carries inside of her beyond a label.

Too many families are told to just be grateful for whatever support they can get, even when that support is incomplete, inconsistent, or missing where it matters most. Children who need extra support should not have to fight to be understood in the classroom or made to feel like their worth is smaller than a diagnosis. When schools fail to meet students with disabilities  where they are, kids lose confidence, families burn out, and opportunities shrink before they ever had a fair chance.

I am calling on school leaders in South Carolina to require meaningful support for special education students across communication, sensory needs, learning access, social development, and life skills. That means training staff to understand autism with dignity, giving students appropriate accommodations, and making sure families are treated like partners instead of obstacles. Our children matter more than paperwork, and their education should reflect who they are, not just the limitations others assume.

If you believe children with disabilities of all kinds deserve to be supported, respected, and given every chance to thrive, please sign this petition. Sign if you believe we should never give up on them, never let other people define their worth, and never stop pushing for the support they need.
