Require silent panic alarms in Michigan schools

Require silent panic alarms in Michigan schools
The Issue
As students in Michigan, school safety is not an abstract issue; it is part of our daily reality. As members of the Make Our Schools Safe (MOSS) organization and the MOSS Club, we believe that protecting students and educators must be treated as a priority, not a reaction after a tragedy occurs.
This petition calls on Michigan lawmakers to support the passage and implementation of Alyssa’s Law (HB 4241) across the state.
Alyssa’s Law is named in memory of Alyssa Alhadeff, a victim of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting. The law focuses on implementing silent panic alert systems in schools, allowing teachers and staff to instantly notify law enforcement and first responders during emergencies without escalating situations. These systems reduce response time, improve coordination, and save lives.
In Michigan, the absence of a statewide mandate leaves school safety dependent on funding disparities and local policy decisions. This creates unequal protection across districts and leaves many schools without access to critical emergency infrastructure. Passing Alyssa’s Law (HB 4241) would establish a clear statewide standard for safety while enabling funding mechanisms that allow all schools to implement these systems.
As a student-led organization, Make Our Schools Safe (MOSS) advocates for proactive, preventative solutions rather than reactive responses to violence. Alyssa’s Law (HB 4241) represents a practical and necessary step toward modernizing school safety systems and protecting school communities before crises occur.
We call on Michigan legislators and education officials to:
Support the passage of Alyssa’s Law (HB 4241)
Mandate silent panic alert systems in public schools
Provide funding access for statewide implementation
Prioritize prevention, preparedness, and protection
Schools should be spaces of learning, growth, and security — not fear.
Michigan has the opportunity to lead with prevention, not tragedy-driven reform.
Support Alyssa’s Law (HB 4241). Support Michigan students. Support safer schools.
