Require Sele School to review the 35-minute lunchtime
The Issue
I am a concerned parent whose son attends Sele School in Hertford. Recently, he shared his experiences with the school's current lunchtime policy, and I am compelled to bring attention to this issue. The school allocates only 35 minutes for lunch, which my son—and many other pupils—find insufficient for both proper nourishment and social interaction. This truncated break leaves students feeling rushed and stressed, and has detrimental effects on their behaviour and overall wellbeing in the later afternoons.
The importance of an adequate lunch break cannot be overstated. It's a time for students not only to refuel their bodies with essential nutrients but also to engage in social activities that are crucial for mental and emotional development. Shortening this time impacts all students but poses an even greater challenge for those with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) or anxiety. These students require additional time and support to manage their daily routines, and a rushed lunch break can exacerbate their stress and mental health challenges.
Research shows that providing students with a longer, more relaxed lunch period can lead to improvements in behaviour, focus, and overall school performance. According to Action for Healthy Kids, students with adequate lunchtime are less stressed and perform better academically. Studies also indicate that a rushed lunch break can contribute to an increase in anxiety and behavioural issues among students, as they do not have sufficient time to relax and recharge before returning to classes.
I urge the administration at Sele School to reassess the current lunchtime policy and consider extending it. This change could make a meaningful difference in the daily lives of all students, particularly those facing additional challenges.
By signing this petition, you are supporting the wellbeing of our children and advocating for a conducive learning environment at Sele School. Please join me in calling for a review of the school's lunchtime policy to ensure the mental and emotional health of our students is prioritized. Together, we can make a change. Please sign this petition to lend your support.
Update:
The school has confirmed it will not change the lunchtime provision at this time, stating there is “no evidence” a change is required.
However, parents and pupils continue to report that 35 minutes is not sufficient time to eat, socialise, and emotionally regulate, particularly for pupils with SEND or mental health needs.
Pupils themselves have stated that limited social time contributes to misbehaviour later in the day.
This petition now calls for a formal review of the lunchtime period, including current parent and pupil consultation and consideration of wellbeing and SEND impact.
Please continue to sign and share so pupil voice is properly heard.
