The Issue

Our hearts are shattered after losing our beloved son, Olly, who had just turned two years old. He was full of life and joy, but that joy was taken from us suddenly and tragically at a wedding. While playing on a church property, Olly innocently approached a septic tank. The lid was unsecured, and within moments, our precious child fell in and drowned. This was an avoidable tragedy—one that no family should ever have to endure.

The danger posed by unsecured septic tank lids is real and pervasive. Every year, numerous children are harmed or killed because these covers are not adequately secured. According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, approximately 115 fatalities each year involve children aged 14 and under due to unintentional drownings in locations like this. It is evident that more stringent measures are required to prevent such heart-wrenching losses.

We propose a law that mandates all septic tank lids and access ports to be locked and secured. Each lid must be equipped with child-proof locking mechanisms. Furthermore, all septic tanks should undergo rigorous safety checks after any service or maintenance is performed to ensure all security measures are intact.

These action steps are practical and urgently needed. By implementing them, we can create safer environments for our children and eliminate the threat posed by unsecured septic tanks. We call upon lawmakers and officials to prioritize this safety regulation to protect our vulnerable young ones.

We ask for your support in preventing further tragedies. By signing this petition, you join us in demanding that an Olly Law be enacted—one that will save lives and spare families the heartache we have suffered. Together, we can safeguard our communities and honor the memory of our dear Olly by ensuring no other family endures such a loss. Please add your name to this petition and stand with us in seeking change for a safer tomorrow.
