Since the start of the school year, our middle school has been facing a significant issue with transportation that directly impacts the safety and well-being of students. The buses provided by the school district simply do not have enough seats for all the students who rely on them. As a result, many students, including myself, have been forced to sit on the ground, stand in the aisle, or overcrowd the seats that are available.

This situation isn't just uncomfortable; it poses a real safety risk. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, unseated and standing passengers are at a higher risk of injury in the event of sudden stops or accidents. Moreover, the American School Bus Council emphasizes the importance of seating capacity not being exceeded, as it jeopardizes the overall safety structure of the bus.

This problem isn't isolated to just one or two buses. It appears to be a widespread issue affecting our district, affecting multiple routes and dozens of students daily. It's not only a question of safety but also one of fairness and accessibility. All students deserve a safe, secure, and appropriate mode of transport to and from school.

We urge the school district to take immediate action to resolve this critical issue. This can be achieved by reassessing the number of buses allocated to our school, especially those serving densely populated routes. Additionally, they should conduct a thorough analysis of current ridership data and increase fleet size if necessary, ensuring the number of seats meets the demand.

By taking these measures, the district will not only align with safety guidelines but also demonstrate a commitment to student welfare. Our school buses need to be adequately equipped to handle student capacity; anything less compromises our trust and well-being.
