Require Safety Checks of Heavy Equipment in Every Florida School
The Issue
A 5-year-old student at Riviera Elementary School in Palm Bay, Florida, died on October 7 after a large video display board fell and struck the child during the school day. Staff called 911 and tried to save the child, and medical teams kept trying at the hospital, but the student did not survive.
Police say early signs point to a tragic accident, but investigators are still working to learn why the display came down. Families deserve those answers. They also deserve to know that the screens, TVs and other heavy equipment in their own children’s classrooms are secure.
Brevard Public Schools Superintendent Mark Rendell and the Brevard County School Board can act right now. They should order an immediate inspection of every display, television and heavy fixture on every district campus, fix or remove anything that is not secure, and share the results with parents. When the investigation is complete, its findings about what went wrong should be made public.
One district is not enough. Classrooms across Florida rely on the same kinds of large screens. The Florida Department of Education and the Florida Legislature should set a clear statewide standard for how heavy equipment is installed in schools and how often it is checked, and require districts to make those inspection records available to families.
Keeping children safe at school is not a partisan issue. Parents of every background send their kids to class expecting them to come home. No family should lose a child to equipment that could have been secured.
Sign the petition to demand safety checks in every Florida classroom before another child is hurt.
