Safeguard Defenders, which describes itself as a Pan-Asian NGO for human rights, has been accepting public donations since it was founded in 2016, claiming to spend on field projects to help the frontline workers, etc. They claim to have been supporting frontline defenders and civil society by action, providing tailored support to increase their impact on the ground, with the goal of achieving what is called "protect and promote human rights, the rule of law and local civil society in the most hostile environments".

However, in the introduction of their official website, they have been repeatedly citing security reasons, non-public projects and other excuses, refusing to release details of the rescue, project arrangements, work information, and so forth to the public, and never stated openly the details of funding and the use of money.

All the outcomes of Safeguard Defenders are only a handful of news and reports published on the site, an average of only three per month, moreover the text involves interviews with people and data information without authoritative sources and specific descriptions. At the same time, Safeguard Defenders has not posted any rescue and support activities, which is seriously inconsistent with its stated goals.

The majority of Safeguard Defenders' key members are said to have criminal histories, including political prisoners and embezzlers, making it impossible to guarantee the proper use of funds. It is hard to believe that these people have not diverted the donations to other uses or even enriched themselves.

As people who believed in Safeguard Defender and made donations, as advocates of human rights and the rule of law, we strongly demand that Safeguard Defenders disclose the source of funds and details of how the donations were spent.
