My childhood cat who was 8 years old and had so much life in her, was taken from me because of a driver speeding on the road. She was my best friend and my soulmate. Every day I live with the guilt knowing that driver will never be held accountable and she will never get justice and I will never get closure, the driver responsible for her death never came forward and didn’t even stop to see if she was okay. If I cannot find the person who stole my best friend, I will make sure that if this happens to anyone else they will get closure knowing something was done.

Thousands of cats lose their lives on roads each year, and many more suffer serious injuries, left in pain and distress. In many cases, they go unreported. There is no accountability for those who fail to report this happening, because it is not a law to. It’s in place for animals like cows, pigs, dogs, but not cats.

We need to make sure that any road collisions involving cats must be reported, whether the animal is injured, left to suffer unnecessarily, or in the worst case; dead. By making sure that drivers are accountable to report these accidents, we can reduce the chances of a cat being injured or their life being taken and that justice is served.

To bring this change, I urge the Irish government to introduce legislation that requires all road collisions with cats to be reported. This will not only bring closure to pet owners but also ensure a more humane treatment of cats because the same law in place for dogs, cats are pets the same way.
