Require Public Vote for Construction of New Courthouse, Jail, or County Annex

The Issue

As taxpayers of Van Zandt County, we are deeply concerned about a project that is slated to cost us an estimated $150 million. This project potentially involves the construction of a new jail, courthouse, and annex of various county offices, to be constructed at the old Paul Michael Building in Canton (the estimated cost to purchase that building is $4.6 million). This project seemingly disregards more immediate needs in our community that far outweigh the desire for the construction of new facilities. VZ County has schools that need performance improvement, many roads in major need of repair, emergency personnel shortages, and other crucial infrastructures in dire need of immediate attention and funds. We agree that our jail and courthouse may need upgrades/improvements, but  given that the current facilities are compliant with state standards (aside from the staff shortage) such a large-scale project requires more community input and transparency, given its substantial impact on our already hyper inflating property taxes. Therefore, we demand that any project of this magnitude should mandatorily require voter approval before it can be initiated. We stand for greater participation in deciding how our hard earned tax dollars are spent, and greater accountability on the part of the county administration. Sign this petition if you are a concerned citizen of Van Zandt County and agree with us that your voice should be heard and your vote should count when it comes to such significant community decisions.
