When my sister went off to college, my stepfather had my brother move into her room. It took five long years before she could move back into her room. This situation highlights a significant issue that many college students face – the lack of rights protecting their living spaces while they're away at college.

When college students leave home for education, they embark on a journey filled with academic challenges, personal growth, and new responsibilities. However, the last thing they should worry about is losing their personal space at home. Unfortunately, many students return to find their rooms repurposed, and their belongings displaced. This transition period should be manageable and supportive, not a source of additional stress.

We are calling on lawmakers to introduce specific legislation that ensures college students' rooms are protected during their absence at college. We propose establishing a "College Student Home Protection Act" that mandates:

1. Clear guidelines for family members regarding the use of the student's room while they are away.
2. Safeguarding personal belongings to avoid misuse or loss.
3. Defining circumstances under which temporary use of a student's room is permissible, with their explicit consent.
4. Establishing penalties or repercussions for unauthorized alteration or occupancy of student rooms.

By enacting this legislation, families will be more transparent in their home management during a student's college years. It will also ensure that students have a stable and secure home environment awaiting them upon their return.
