The Issue

I have worked with dogs for close to 4 years now, and it breaks my heart how often I see poorly bred dogs dealing with health and behavioral issues. People keep asking why shelters are so full, and honestly, this is why. We keep treating dogs like products to shop for instead of living, conscious beings with their own needs, feelings, and personalities.

This does not just affect one dog here and one dog there. It affects shelters that are already overwhelmed, rescue groups trying to keep up, and families who end up unprepared for the realities of the dogs they bought for looks alone. It affects senior dogs, trained dogs, house-broken dogs, and amazing dogs of every kind who are sitting in shelters waiting for someone to give them a chance while people keep feeding the same cycle.

That is why I am calling for pet stores to prioritize shelter and rescue dog adoptions instead of breeder-linked sales. If businesses are going to profit from people wanting a dog, they should be helping connect those people to animals who already need homes. Dogs are not toys, not status symbols, and not something to collect because everyone else has one. We need systems that make adoption the first option people see, not the last.

If you believe dogs deserve better than being bred for selfish human preferences while shelters stay overcrowded, please sign. If you believe the amazing dogs already here deserve a real chance, please add your name. We have to stop rewarding a system that treats dogs like accessories and start building one that values their lives.

Theo GarciaPetition StarterI have always been passionate about animal advocacy, I knew from the time I was little I wanted to help them. After years of working with dogs the issues have only become more apparent and I think it’s important we use or voices for the ones who can’t.
