As a parent, I am deeply concerned about the well-being and safety of young women across Washington State. There are situations where minors, some of the most vulnerable young women in our communities, are making major life-altering decisions without the knowledge or guidance of their parents or guardians. Such decisions not only affect their physical health but also their emotional and psychological well-being. It is crucial that we bring this delicate issue into the light and ensure that parents, who are the primary caregivers and support system of these young individuals, are involved in such significant decisions. It is not only the parents' right as their God-given and legal guardians, but a common-sense measure to protect young girls from coercion. 

Currently, Washington State law allows minors to undergo an abortion without parental consent or even notification. This lack of requirement may lead to young women facing immense pressure and making these decisions in isolation. According to the Guttmacher Institute, as of 2023, 37 states across the United States require some form of parental involvement in a minor’s decision to have an abortion. Washington State, however, remains one of the few exceptions, exposing minors to potential risks and depriving parents of the right to parent and protect their children. 

Parental consent laws are designed to protect young women from making uninformed decisions. With parental guidance, minors can have access to comprehensible information about the procedure they are contemplating. Parents can provide emotional support, help identify potential alternatives, and ensure that aftercare is provided if needed. Additionally, parental consent acts as an added layer of protection against any coercive practices that may be influencing any young girl's decision.

It is vital to introduce a law that aligns Washington State with these protective measures, respecting the family unit and strengthening the support system for minors. By requiring parental consent, we can work towards creating an environment where young women receive wise guidance from those who love them the most. This isn't about control. This is about protection.
