The Issue

Growing up with a peanut allergy, I've faced numerous challenges when dining out, constantly worried about the potential for a severe allergic reaction. It's not just about the inconvenience; it's about safety, both mine and countless others who share similar concerns. In Oregon, many of us are forced to play a risky guessing game every time we choose to dine out. We deserve to know what is in our food.

Oregon should follow the example of other progressive states by requiring all restaurants to disclose the presence of the top three allergens in their food menus. These should include, but not be limited to, peanuts, tree nuts, and shellfish - allergens that are common threats to many of us. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), food allergies affect an estimated 8% of children and 4% of adults in the U.S., with reactions ranging from mild to life-threatening. This isn't just a personal plea; it’s a call for action to ensure safety and transparency for everyone.

A mandate for allergen disclosure will not only protect those with allergies but also enhance the overall dining experience, allowing everyone to make informed choices without the fear of adverse reactions. Transparency in food preparation is a basic right and an essential step towards inclusive dining. It's time for Oregon to lead the way in ensuring allergen safety in our restaurants.

Let’s urge lawmakers to enact legislation requiring restaurants to indicate the presence of these top allergens on their menus. Sign this petition to protect the rights and health of all Oregonians who dine out. Your signature can make a significant impact and change lives.
