Require no statute of limitations for animal abuse

Require no statute of limitations for animal abuse
The Issue
Imagine if the law dismissed the pain and suffering faced by your loved one, all because too much time had passed. This is what can happen to our four-legged family members in several states in the United States of America to include Ohio. It's a reality I've faced, and I refuse to accept it anymore.
My name is [Xanthe LaDale Smith], and I'm from [Rutland, Ohio]. In our small community, our neighbor, notoriously violated the sanctity and safety of our dogs. My beloved dog, Xena was brutally shot in both her hind legs, robbing her of the joy and spirit she brought to our lives and she still suffers today. A year and a half later, my other cherished dog, Kujo was viciously attacked, this time being shot seven times, leading to his tragic death.
These heinous acts remain unpunished because of the restrictive time frames currently entrenched in our legal system. The pain and trauma animals experience have no expiration date, and neither should the pursuit of justice for them. The current statute of limitations on animal abuse cases allows abusers to walk free if they've evaded legal consequences long enough. This is an injustice and outright disregard for the value and rights of animals who enrich our lives every day.
According to the Animal Legal Defense Fund, Ohio has been ranked among the top ten states for animal protection laws, yet there's a significant flaw when it comes to holding perpetrators accountable over time. Current statutes impose limits, often only a few years, which can render serious cases stale and unenforceable to the detriment of victims and justice alike.
This petition aims to amend Ohio law to remove or extend the statute of limitations on animal abuse cases. By doing so, we ensure that every act of cruelty has consequences irrespective of when it is discovered or reported. Similar measures have been undertaken in other states, offering a profound impact on the prosecution rates and convictions of animal abusers.
Join me in demanding that our legislators stand up against animal cruelty by closing this loophole. By signing this petition, you are advocating for a future where our animal companions are granted the protection and justice they so rightfully deserve.
