The Issue

This petition is in loving memory of Phillipe, a Danbury resident who tragically lost his life following a motorcycle accident in July 2026.

Phillipe was so much more than what happened to him. He was a son, a brother, a friend, and someone deeply loved by so many. He was full of life, hardworking, adventurous, and had so many dreams and plans ahead of him. He loved traveling, sports, animals, and simply enjoying life. None of us ever imagined it could all be taken away so suddenly.

I know that changing this law won’t bring him back, and wearing a helmet doesn’t guarantee someone will survive an accident. But if sharing his story and fighting for this change can help save even one life, then I believe it’s worth trying.

Right now, Connecticut only requires motorcycle riders under the age of 21 to wear a helmet. Once you’re 21, it’s completely up to you. And while I understand that everyone has the right to make their own choices, I believe that when it comes to something that could potentially save your life, there should be more protection in place.

A motorcycle accident can happen anywhere. It doesn’t have to be on a highway or at a high speed. It can happen right down the street from your house, on a road you’ve driven a hundred times, or during what was supposed to be a quick ride. And just like that, someone’s entire life can change.

Studies have shown that helmets are approximately 37% effective in preventing motorcycle rider deaths and can reduce the risk of head injuries by about 69%.

An accident doesn’t just affect the person riding the motorcycle. It affects their parents, children, partners, friends, and everyone who loves them. It also affects first responders, medical professionals, and those who survive with serious injuries that may require lifelong care.

We have laws requiring seat belts and car seats because we know they save lives. So why shouldn’t motorcycle helmets be treated the same way?

I’m asking Connecticut lawmakers to consider making the following changes:

  1. Require all motorcycle riders and passengers, regardless of age, to wear a DOT-approved helmet while riding on public roads throughout Connecticut.
  2.  Introduce legislation to make this a statewide requirement.
  3. Give families who have lost loved ones, accident survivors, first responders, and medical professionals the opportunity to share their experiences and be heard.
  4. Help educate the public about motorcycle safety and the importance of wearing a helmet.

I’m not starting this petition because I want to take away anyone’s freedom. I’m starting it because I’ve seen how devastating the consequences of a motorcycle accident can be, and I wouldn’t wish that pain on anyone.

If making helmets mandatory can save even one person, or give one more family the chance to see their loved one walk through the door again, I believe it’s worth fighting for.

I can’t change what happened, no matter how much I wish I could. But maybe, just maybe, I can help make a difference for someone else.

Please consider signing and sharing this petition. Every signature matters, and together we can push for a change that could save lives.
