Require mobile number portability in Zambia

The Issue

Every day, countless Zambians face the frustrating challenge of poor mobile network service. Like many others, I often struggle with connecting to my current network provider, a predicament underscored by inadequate network coverage and a lack of accountability from these service providers. In some areas, it's almost impossible to get a reliable signal, making it difficult to access essential services and stay connected with loved ones.

The root of this problem lies in our current system – a limitation we can overcome by implementing Mobile Number Portability (MNP). This would allow consumers to effortlessly switch to a preferred network provider while retaining their existing phone numbers. Imagine a world where the power is placed back into the hands of the consumer, compelling network providers to improve their services or risk losing customers.

This initiative is not unprecedented. Many countries around the world have adopted MNP laws, resulting in heightened competition among providers, improved services, and greater customer satisfaction. According to the Global System for Mobile Communications Association (GSMA), countries that have implemented MNP have seen an average increase in customer satisfaction scores by 30%. These changes drive the service providers to improve infrastructure and extend better service offerings.

To effectuate this change, we call upon the Zambia Information and Communications Technology Authority (ZICTA) and the National Assembly of Zambia to take decisive action. By drafting and passing a law that mandates Mobile Number Portability, they can empower the citizens of Zambia, promote fair competition among network providers, and enhance the country’s telecommunications landscape.

Together, we can make our voices heard. We can push for the implementation of a Mobile Number Portability policy that international standards dictate and improve our communication services vastly. Let's make this change happen for a better-connected Zambia. We urge you to sign this petition and join us in our call for a more empowered and customer-centric telecommunications sector.
