The Issue

On July 4, 2025, Allie Hummel suffered yet another traumatic experience at the hands of her husband when he was arrested for strangling her. This was not the first instance; he had strangled her multiple times before. Yet, despite the seriousness of his actions, the judicial system failed her. Her husband plead down to two misdemeanors and faced no jail time. Tragically, within four months of this plea deal, Allie was found deceased in their shared home. While her exact cause of death remains undetermined, her earlier experiences of abuse cannot be overlooked.

Allie's tragic story is not an isolated one. Across Missouri, countless women face the horror and fear of strangulation by their partners, yet the legal system often allows these perpetrators to walk free or face minor penalties. This must change.

Strangulation is a serious crime that often serves as a precursor to even more violent acts, including murder. Studies have shown that victims of strangulation are seven times more likely to become a homicide victim later on. This association emphasizes the need for stronger legal repercussions.

We urgently call for Missouri prosecutors and judges to enforce stricter laws making strangulation a mandatory felony with jail time, irrespective of whether the partner presses charges. Strangulation should be recognized for what it is—a grave and violent crime deserving of severe legal consequences—thus ensuring that abusers are held accountable, and victims are protected.

Implementing such a policy will not only provide justice for victims like Allie but will also act as a deterrent, preventing future tragedies.

This petition calls for legislative reform to create safer environments for women in Missouri. Join us in demanding action and safeguarding countless lives by signing this petition today.
