Require Medical Oversight at Minnesota Boarding Schools
The Issue
Nine years ago, I sustained a significant back injury at a boarding school here in Minnesota. Despite bringing this serious injury to the attention of the school's administration, I was met with a shocking level of indifference. The head of the boarding school failed me by not providing any medical attention. Now, nearly a decade later, I am still dealing with severe back pain and might have a herniated disc in my mid back. This isn't just about my personal struggle; it's about a broader pattern of negligence affecting students who deserve to be safe and cared for.
This experience led me to discover that other students have faced similar neglect. Such institutional negligence puts everyone at risk. No student should endure unnecessary pain or develop chronic conditions because their school failed to act responsibly. Schools are meant to be safe environments where students can learn and grow, not places where they're left to suffer.
It's crucial for us to push for mandatory medical oversight at all boarding schools across Minnesota. By enforcing clear health standards, we can protect students from neglect and ensure that injuries are promptly and adequately addressed. Boarding schools should have trained medical staff available to assess and respond to injuries, preventing them from becoming long-term health issues.
I am pursuing a lawsuit to address this negligence legally, but we also need systemic change to prevent future incidents. We can and must do better for the students in our community. I ask for your support in demanding that boarding schools prioritize their students' health and safety by implementing essential medical oversight.
