The Issue

My best friend and ministry partner is currently incarcerated in the Marshall County Jail under false allegations. Despite being withheld in such dire circumstances, he, along with over 400 other inmates, is living in deplorable conditions. Jail is meant to be a place for rehabilitation, but sadly it is turning into an overcrowded zoo with inmates sleeping on floors, without proper beds or any semblance of dignity. This not only defies decency but also overlooks the need for meaningful rehabilitation.

The Marshall County Jail was designed to accommodate a maximum of 150 inmates, yet it currently houses over 400. This overcrowding poses serious risks to the health and security of inmates and staff alike. It is imperative that we address this violation of standards to ensure the safety and rehabilitation of the incarcerated.

Moreover, the current state of the jail strips inmates of potential opportunities to turn their lives around. My friend could be taking part in addiction counseling and job skills training, programs that should be standard in a facility like this. Rehabilitation strategies—such as addiction and trauma counseling, job skills training, and educational classes—are essential tools in preventing recidivism and enabling individuals to reintegrate into society successfully.

Some might see the overcrowding and lack of programming as just another part of the justice system, but this isn’t just. It’s an injustice to each and every inmate who has the right to better themselves and live with dignity. It is time for the Marshall County Sheriff's Department to adopt and enforce a cap on their inmate population and invest in effective rehabilitation programs.

We demand that the Marshall County Sheriff's Department comply with the inmate population limit of 150 and introduce comprehensive rehabilitation initiatives, including addiction and trauma counseling, job training, and education classes. By doing so, we not only improve jail conditions but also support individuals in becoming productive members of society, reducing the cycle of re-offending.

Please join us in advocating for a fair and rehabilitative future by signing this petition. Let's make a real change where it's desperately needed.
