The Issue

This issue is deeply personal to me because my friend was the victim of an unprovoked attack by a middle school student at a county high school in Georgia. Neither the attacker nor my friend attended this school, nor did they know each other. Alarmingly, the punishment given to the young attacker was minimal. This incident has been a catalyst for my belief that we need to take a different approach to student violence, an approach that first seeks to understand the underlying causes rather than jumping straight to punitive measures.

Children who exhibit violent behavior in school settings are often projecting underlying issues that they have not yet dealt with. Whether these stem from personal struggles, unresolved trauma, or merely mimicking negative behaviors they've witnessed, these instances should be addressed through comprehensive and mandatory counseling for both the child involved in the violence and their parents. By understanding and addressing the root causes, we can help mold better human beings and foster safer school environments.

According to the National Association of School Psychologists, early intervention through counseling can drastically reduce incidences of aggression and violence in schools. This petition calls for the state of Georgia to take progressive action by mandating that any child involved in physical aggression on school property, along with their parents, attend counseling therapy sessions. This would help in understanding the root of their violent behavior and equip them with the tools needed to manage their emotions and actions positively.

Implementing such measures would not only benefit the individual students and families involved but also help prevent future incidents, making schools across Georgia safer for everyone. These counseling sessions should be led by qualified professionals specifically trained to address behavioral issues in youth.

We ask the school boards, state legislators, and community leaders in Georgia to support this initiative. We are not just calling for punitive measures but for a system that supports healing and prevention. Let's work together to build a compassionate and understanding community where violence is tackled at its roots and every child is given the opportunity to grow beyond their mistakes.

Please sign this petition to help make schools across Georgia a safer and more supportive environment for all students.
