The Issue

Lubbock, Texas is a community deeply rooted in agriculture and wildlife. The very essence of our region has been shaped by vast farms and a rich variety of wildlife habitats. We are proud of our ties to the land and the ecosystems that flourish here. However, we face continuous drought conditions, with rainfall being a rare blessing and our county being landlocked. Introducing AI data centers to Lubbock would exacerbate the fragile balance we have managed to maintain, especially considering the significant water resources required by such facilities.

AI data centers are known to consume vast amounts of water to cool the technology that powers them. In a city where every drop of water counts, welcoming these centers would strain our already limited water supply further. This move would not only compromise our water resources but would also pose a risk to our long-standing agricultural foundations and the wildlife that depends on our natural resources for survival. Our community’s sustainability and ecological balance are at stake.

Moreover, Lubbock’s identity is deeply intertwined with its agricultural heritage and its commitment to conservation. Allowing AI data centers within our city limits may bring short-term economic benefits, but at what cost? We can look towards more sustainable avenues for growth that align with our values, such as promoting local wildlife conservation efforts, supporting farmers, and investing in eco-friendly technology that respects our environment.

There are numerous examples globally where communities have opted to protect their natural resources over lucrative technological advancements. These communities have thrived by prioritizing long-term sustainability and preserving their unique local ecosystems. Lubbock should not be an exception. We have the opportunity to take a stand against this potential environmental threat and prioritize what truly makes our city unique.

I urge you to support this petition and call upon the Lubbock City Council to deny the establishment of AI data centers within our city limits. Instead, let us renew our commitment to protecting our local wildlife, preserving our water resources, and promoting sustainable growth that reflects the core values upon which Lubbock was built. Please sign this petition to safeguard the future of our community.
