Require La Habra City School District to LOWER class size ratios
The Issue
We are a cohort of concerned Kindergarten parents that want to highlight an urgent issue affecting our children at Ladera Palma Dual Immersion Language Academy, and the entire district as a whole. This school year started with an alarming imbalance in our kindergarten classroom: 30 young students being taught by a single teacher without consistent support from a dedicated aide. Instead, we've seen a rotation of adults stepping in to "assist," which is far from an ideal solution and has done little to address the root of the problem.
Small children, particularly in the foundational years of education, require a more focused learning environment, where every child can receive the attention and support they need. A single kindergarten teacher tasked with the education of 30 five-year-olds faces the impossible challenge of not only delivering instruction but also managing transitions, maintaining classroom behavior, and supporting social-emotional development. As parents, we have approached the school board repeatedly—first in August and again on September 10th—yet no clear plan has been established by the district's superintendent to remedy this issue.
District personnel are misleading the public stating that adequate support has been given and this is enough to help the children and teachers thrive. This is a lie!
Research consistently supports smaller class sizes, especially in early education, to improve learning outcomes, help with personal attention to each student, and foster better social and emotional development. According to Education Week, studies have shown that smaller class sizes in early education lead to higher levels of student achievement and engagement, laying a solid foundation for future success.
Given these facts, we propose that the La Habra City School District take immediate action to reduce class sizes in Kindergarten. Specifically, we suggest a maximum student-to-teacher ratio of 20:1, along with the hiring of permanent classroom aides. These aides should be consistently present and well-trained, ensuring a supportive and stable environment for both teaching and learning.
We understand there are budgetary constraints; however, the long-term benefits of investing in our children's education far outweigh the costs. Every child deserves a nurturing, supportive classroom environment where they can thrive, and every teacher deserves the resources necessary to provide this.
Join me in urging the La Habra City School District Superintendent to take concrete steps towards lowering classroom sizes in our kindergarten classes and beyond. Sign this petition to stand with us in demanding a responsible and effective educational environment for our children.
