Require Kalamazoo to Try Non-Lethal Deer Management First

The Issue

Kalamazoo officials are weighing a plan to let hunters shoot deer with bows at the McLinden Nature Trails, a public area in Comstock Township that also sits atop the region's drinking water source. The city says deer are eating too many young oak and hickory trees, keeping the forest from growing back, and healthy tree roots protect the groundwater that supplies 11 communities.

But Kalamazoo's own Environmental Concerns Committee isn't convinced killing deer is the answer. Committee member David Benac put it plainly: killing deer only clears out the herd for a little while before numbers bounce back. "It's just a treadmill, it's not going to change," said Benac. The committee has already decided to bring in a university intern to study the problem before recommending anything, a sign that even the city's own advisors think this needs more than a bow and an antlerless tag.

Residents raised real concerns too. Bow hunting near shared walking trails puts families and pets at risk, and no one has explained what happens to the parts hunters leave behind, food that could draw coyotes deeper into the preserve.

There are better ways to protect this forest and this water supply than an archery cull. Habitat management, fencing, tree protection, and other non-lethal deer control methods deserve a real chance before any hunt moves forward. Comstock Township officials have agreed to gather resident questions before deciding anything further, so now is the moment for them to hear it. James Baker, Kalamazoo's public services director, and the Comstock Charter Township Board should commit to fully exploring non-lethal deer management before authorizing any cull on this shared public land.
