Require Just-Cause Employment Protections in Kentucky

Require Just-Cause Employment Protections in Kentucky
The Issue
Kentucky workers deserve fairness, dignity, and stability in the workplace. Under our state’s current at-will employment system, a person can be fired without warning, without documentation, and without any valid reason. This system enables bullying behavior, creates fear in the workplace, and contributes to increasing emotional and psychological stress among employees.
We are calling on the Kentucky General Assembly to pass legislation requiring just cause for termination, meaning an employer must:
• Provide a clear, documented reason for termination;
• Demonstrate performance or misconduct issues before firing;
• Give employees an opportunity to improve through fair warning or progressive discipline (except in cases of serious misconduct);
• Apply disciplinary policies consistently and without discrimination.
This change would not harm responsible employers. Instead, it would encourage healthier workplaces, reduce unnecessary turnover, and protect hardworking Kentuckians from sudden, unfair job loss.
We urge our elected representatives to introduce and support a Just-Cause Termination Act to bring accountability, fairness, and mental stability back to Kentucky workplace
