According to the Zimbabwe National Statistics Agency, road traffic accidents accounted for over 1,700 deaths in 2022 alone, with many of these involving buses. The repeated occurrence of these accidents suggests an urgent need for intervention.
The government of Zimbabwe must implement stringent safety regulations for these buses. Regular and comprehensive inspections can prevent mechanical failures, identify unqualified drivers, and ensure that only roadworthy buses are allowed to transport passengers. According to a study by the World Health Organization, countries enforcing stringent vehicle inspections have reduced road fatalities by up to 20%.
We propose the establishment of a dedicated agency responsible for the inspection and certification of all cross-border buses operating in Zimbabwe.
