The Issue

My daughter was a victim of domestic violence at the hands of her ex-boyfriend, who is a law enforcement officer in Gulf County, Florida. This traumatic experience has not only impacted her daily life and mental health but has also brought to light serious concerns about the impartiality of investigations conducted when law enforcement officers are involved in such cases.

In Gulf County, domestic violence cases involving law enforcement officers are currently investigated internally, which raises significant questions about bias and the potential for conflicts of interest. With my daughter’s case, and likely many others, how can victims feel confident that justice will be served when those investigating the crimes are colleagues of the accused?

We believe the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) should be responsible for conducting independent investigations into domestic violence incidents involving any Gulf County law enforcement personnel. The FDLE has the appropriate resources and independence to ensure a fair and unbiased investigation, helping to restore trust in the system for victims and their families.

Statistics from the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence indicate that one in three women and one in four men have experienced some form of physical violence by an intimate partner. In counties like Gulf, where the line between victim and accused can be blurred due to professional ties, impartiality in investigations is crucial.

By mandating that the FDLE take charge of these investigations, we can ensure greater accountability and potentially reduce domestic violence incidents by assuring victims that their cases will be handled fairly and without prejudice.

Join us in calling for an immediate policy change that requires all domestic violence cases involving Gulf County law enforcement officers to be investigated by the FDLE. This change is critical for the safety and security of all residents in Gulf County. Sign this petition to help us advocate for justice and unbiased oversight.
