Require Huffman School Bus Transportation to Provide Equal Pick-Up for all children

The Issue

As a parent of children attending Huffman School, I find it deeply unfair that my kids have to walk 1 mile everyday just to catch their school bus, while other kids on the same bus route are picked up right in front of their homes. This inequality doesn't only inconvenience our family daily, but it infringes upon my children's basic rights to fair and equitable access to transportation. When it rains, the complexity grows, and sometimes it's impossible for us to drop them at their stop, making them miss school is not an option. Why can't the bus drive down our street, just like it does for others? Why is our route excluded but others stand outside the home with the parents watching them get on the bus.

Is it because the bus driver would have to adjust the schedule by 10 minutes? A minor adjustment that holds great implications for child safety and educational equity. It's critical to note here that the National Center for Safe Routes to School reports that, generally, walking routes to school should not exceed half a mile for elementary school pupils, which makes this current arrangement in violation of recommended practices.

This petition calls on Huffman School and its bus transportation service to address this injustice promptly. Addressing this unfair situation won't only convenience the affected families, but it'll go a long way to ensure that all of Huffman's students are treated equally and have equal access to their right to education. Let's make school transportation fair for all Huffman Schoolchildren. Please sign this petition to call on Huffman School Bus Transportation to revise their pick-up arrangements and make them as fair as the education they provide. There is ample room for the bus to turn around and we have lighting at the end of the road with a driveway maintained by Harris county made particularly for the bus to turn around. I watched the bus driver do this for 3 years. She retired and now my children walk 1 mile unlike others that ride the bus.
