Require Hospitals to Review and Escalate Dismissed Chronic Symptoms
The Issue
I keep thinking about what I said when I saw the news about Christina Applegate's possible misdiagnosis. If a white woman with money, fame, access, and the confidence to speak up can spend years feeling like something is off and still be dismissed, then what hope does the average woman have? Especially women of color. That is the part I cannot get out of my head. I am not talking about hurt feelings. I am talking about years of symptoms, years of being told to sit with it, and years of consequences when your body has been telling the truth the whole time.
This is bigger than one celebrity and bigger than one diagnosis. So many women living with chronic illness, chronic pain, autoimmune disease, and conditions like ankylosing spondylitis know exactly what this feels like. You say something is wrong. You say the treatment is not helping or the symptoms do not add up. And too often, instead of getting a deeper review, you get brushed off until the damage is worse, the pain is worse, and the options are harder.
That is why I am calling on hospitals and major health systems to create a required review and escalation process when patients repeatedly report that a diagnosis or treatment does not fit what they are experiencing. If a woman comes back again and again saying something is wrong, that should trigger a second look, not another dismissal. Patients dealing with serious immune-suppressing medications and long-term symptoms deserve a real reassessment pathway, clear documentation of their concerns, and access to another qualified specialist before years pass.
We cannot keep acting like this is rare when so many women are living it. We cannot keep expecting patients to fight alone just to be heard. If you have ever been dismissed, misread, or left wondering whether anyone in medicine was actually listening, please sign this petition. Let's demand a system where women do not have to get sicker just to be believed.
