Require Health Insurers to Clearly Explain Why Care Was Denied
Require Health Insurers to Clearly Explain Why Care Was Denied
The Issue
I am so tired of watching people get a denial letter and think that is the end of the road. It is not. I keep saying this because too many of us never get told what is actually happening in the background. A provider recommends a treatment, sends in an authorization, and then the insurance company denies it. Then the patient is left scared, confused, and wondering what they did wrong when sometimes it is something as simple as an incorrect diagnostic code, missing records, or vague language like medical necessity.
That confusion is not harmless. When denial letters are unclear, people miss appeal deadlines, do not know what records to ask for, and give up on care they really want and need. People facing long-term treatment issues do not have extra time to play detective with an insurance company. We should not need an unofficial free internet case manager just to understand a letter that can decide whether we get treatment.
I am calling on health insurance regulators to require insurers to clearly explain every denial in plain language, including the exact reason for the denial, what documentation is missing, whether coding errors may be involved, and the specific steps to appeal. Patients should also be told how many appeal levels exist and what deadlines apply at each stage. If insurance companies can deny care, they can absolutely be required to make the path to appeal understandable.
If you have ever been told no and felt like that was the final answer, this is for you. We deserve transparency, a fair shot at appeal, and a real chance to access medically necessary treatment. Sign this petition so patients are not shut out of care by confusion and fine print.
