The Issue

On October 25 at 10:46 a.m., two pit bulls came onto my side porch and violently attacked my beloved cat, Opal, while she was peacefully sleeping. My partner and I fought desperately to fend off the two dogs, but unfortunately, Opal succumbed to her injuries. Just two months prior, our one-year-old Bernedoodle was also attacked by pit bulls inside our yard. Thankfully, he got away without injury. These repeated attacks have left our entire household traumatized, and it's a chilling reminder of what could happen to our children or other loved ones.

Across communities, pit bulls have been involved in numerous attacks that have raised concerns about public safety. State statistics indicate that pit bulls are responsible for a significant percentage of dog attacks each year. While these dogs can be loving pets, proper training and responsible ownership are essential to ensure they do not pose a danger to people or other animals.

Unfortunately, the existing laws often do not hold negligent owners accountable, even if they have prior citations for the behavior of their pets. Irresponsible ownership, including failure to restrain or properly train, should come with severe consequences to prevent any more tragic incidents.

We propose legislation that mandates harsher penalties for owners of pit bulls or any aggressive breeds who have prior citations. Such penalties could include mandatory training programs, higher fines, or even community service. If owners are equipped with adequate tools and accountability measures, it could prevent future tragedies from occurring.

Immediate action needs to be taken to ensure the safety of our neighborhoods, our pets, and our loved ones. Your signature can be the catalyst for change, emphasizing the importance of responsible pet ownership and stronger community safety measures.

Please sign this petition to demand stronger legislation and to hold negligent pet owners accountable. Together, we can create safer environments for everyone.
