Require GP training for recognising PMDD
The Issue
I am writing this petition not just as an individual struggling with Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD), but for countless others who endure similar struggles and feel unheard. For years, I have found myself trapped in a cycle of being shuttled between healthcare professionals, each time explaining my symptoms in detail. The frustration mounts with every appointment when the only solution I am offered is a form of talking therapy which never addresses the root cause of my distress. It feels like hitting an impenetrable wall, only to be told that my debilitating issues are merely psychological.
PMDD is a severe form of premenstrual syndrome affecting about 3-8% of women of reproductive age. It notably impacts mood, sleep, and general wellbeing, leading to significant disruptions in daily life and mental health. Yet, this condition is severely misunderstood and often disregarded in medical consultations. GP clinics are often the first point of contact and they must be prepared with the knowledge and skills to recognise and offer appropriate management strategies for PMDD.
Many women like me have had their day-to-day activities and mental health crippled, not because there is no solution, but because there is little awareness and education surrounding PMDD among general practitioners. The lack of comprehensive understanding and resources for PMDD in our healthcare system results in countless lives being interrupted by a condition that is entirely manageable.
Studies have shown that appropriate training and education can significantly improve the diagnostic and treatment capabilities among healthcare providers. By mandating PMDD-specific medical training for GPs, we empower them with the tools they need to differentiate PMDD from other conditions, ensuring patients receive timely and effective treatment. This will not only improve quality of care, reducing the emotional burden on those suffering, but also allow healthcare providers to address the condition at its core rather than superficially.
It is time that the healthcare system takes decisive action towards recognising PMDD as a serious condition requiring specialised attention. By equipping GPs with targeted training, we can revolutionise the healthcare experience for those affected, reducing misdiagnosis and invalidation that come from misunderstanding the condition.
Please join me in calling for a change in the training curriculum for all GPs. Let’s ensure that no one else has to go through the cycle of misdiagnosis and ineffective treatment. Sign this petition and help bring awareness and proper treatment to all those living with PMDD.
