The Issue

Over the last 10 months, I've been wrestling with Child Protective Services. I was assigned a guardian ad litem (GAL) for my children, only to find out she resides in Florida, not Ohio. When important situations arose that required her presence in Ohio, she was unable to fulfill her duties promptly due to her geographical constraints. Meetings were either rescheduled or delayed, putting the needs of my children on the back burner.

This situation highlights a significant inefficiency in our system. A GAL who is responsible for the welfare of children should live in the same state where the children are, ensuring they can respond in a timely manner. A GAL who resides out-of-state lacks immediate access to local insights and understanding about the resources and community support available in our area.

Ohio families deserve GALs who can be present when needed, not hindered by distance. A GAL familiar with Ohio can make more informed decisions that directly impact the welfare of children by understanding local culture, resources, and opportunities.

We propose a policy change requiring GALs assigned to Ohio cases to reside within the state. This would prevent unnecessary delays and ensure children's needs are met promptly and effectively. Such a change is critical in safeguarding our children's well-being.

Join us in urging local legislators and child welfare authorities in Coshocton, OH, to enforce this policy to protect our children's future. Support our cause and sign this petition to ensure our children receive the knowledgeable and accessible advocacy they deserve.
