The Issue

Animals in Mahoning County, particularly in the City of Youngstown, are crying out for help. As we pass by frightened eyes peering through rusty cages and hear the anguished cries of neglected pets, it becomes painfully clear that the responsibility to care for these animals has been improperly placed upon the shoulders of a local non-profit organization, Animal Charity. This organization, despite its commendable efforts, cannot be expected to carry on its mission without proper financial support.

Animal Charity has selflessly dedicated its resources to caring for animals who have suffered abuse and neglect. Yet, this non-profit's existence solely depends on the generosity of donations, which are not consistent. With an increasing number of cases demanding urgent intervention, the lack of reliable funding is becoming a critical issue. Last year alone, hundreds of cases of cruelty and neglect were reported, putting immense pressure on the already overstretched resources of this organization.

The City of Youngstown and Mahoning County must step up to their civic responsibilities. These local authorities have a duty to protect and ensure the welfare of animals within their jurisdiction. However, at present, there are no funds allocated from the city or county budgets to support the work of humane agents who can intervene and prevent such cruelty before it's too late.

We propose a solution that the City of Youngstown Mayor, City Council, and Mahoning County Commissioners allocate funds specifically for animal humane agents. By doing so, they would not only relieve the financial burden on Animal Charity but also establish a robust system to actively monitor, prevent, and address incidents of animal cruelty. These professionals would work in tandem with local law enforcement and animal organizations to create a safer environment for all creatures.

It is crucial to recognize that this issue is not just about animal welfare; it reflects the values of our community. Neglect and cruelty towards animals have been linked to broader social violence and criminality. By addressing the root of these issues, we can foster a community that is compassionate and just for both animals and people.

We urge the citizens of Youngstown and Mahoning County to unite in support of this initiative. Let us send a clear message to our local government that animals deserve better protection and care. Please sign this petition to call upon the leaders of Youngstown to act now, provide the necessary funding, and ensure the humane treatment of all animals in our community.
