Our community is devastated by what has been allowed to happen here in Fortuna, CA for decades, without any oversight or accountability. Recent investigations at Miranda’s Rescue have revealed disturbing practices and highlight a dire need for changes in how animal rescues and sanctuaries operate. It is increasingly clear that a lack of oversight and comprehensive documentation has led to unacceptable standards of care and transparency.

We need full oversight nationwide to ensure the well-being of countless innocent animals, we must demand more stringent controls. We propose mandatory full and continuous paperwork for each animal from intake to release, ensuring that records are maintained even if they are transferred to another rescue or shelter. This will provide a traceable record for each animal, ensuring they receive appropriate care throughout their journey.

Furthermore, all veterinary care and vaccinations must be fully documented and transparent. Spaying and neutering should be a prerequisite for all companion animal adoptions to prevent overpopulation and enhance their quality of life.

One of the most troubling concerns is regarding euthanasia. It should be performed solely by fully licensed veterinarians and never casually or without proper justification. This policy is crucial to ensure humane treatment and end-of-life care for animals.

Implementing these changes can significantly improve conditions in animal rescues and sanctuaries, preventing the tragedies we have witnessed from occurring again. We cannot afford to overlook their needs and rights.
