The Issue

Living  in Fort Walton Beach, I've always cherished the unique sense of community that our neighborhood offers. However, as a parent, I now see our streets through a different lens—one of concern and urgency. Recently, one of our citizens has been hit by a vehicle and it was a chilling reminder that our local roads are not as safe as they should be. Many of us have noticed the rising speeds with which cars traverse our streets, often ignoring stop signs and endangering pedestrians and cyclists alike. This is not just an isolated incident but a growing problem that residents across our area have repeatedly voiced concerns about.  Our neighborhood deserves better planning and enforcement to ensure its safety. I propose that the city of Fort Walton Beach undertake the following actions: 1. Conduct a comprehensive traffic study to assess current road usage and identify high-risk areas. 2. Implement traffic-calming measures such as speed bumps, roundabouts, or pedestrian islands, particularly near schools and parks. 3. Enhance enforcement of existing traffic laws, including increased patrols. 4. Improve crosswalks and pedestrian signage to make them more visible and accessible. These solutions are not only feasible but have been successfully implemented in similar communities, resulting in significant reductions in traffic-related incidents. The safety of our children, neighbors, and families can't wait. It is time for Fort Walton Beach to take decisive action to protect its residents from preventable harm. Sign this petition to urge our city officials to prioritize road safety and implement the necessary changes to preserve the well-being of our community.
