The Issue

In cities all across the nation, our animal shelters are facing an overwhelming crisis. They are overrun with pets that have been abandoned or surrendered by owners who were unprepared or unable to care for them. This heartbreaking situation not only puts immense pressure on animal shelters but also highlights a significant gap in pet ownership education. As it is now, many cities are wasting time and resources trying to capture, fix, or rescue or support animals simply due to citizen’s ignorance or negligence. If we begin instilling responsibilities on all pet owners, then we no longer risk overcrowding of strays, or shelters all over, and keep our towns safer and cleaner for all.

To address this issue, we propose implementing a mandatory educational course for all consumers interested in purchasing a pet. Before acquiring a pet, potential owners should be required to complete a comprehensive course that covers essential topics such as pet care, nutrition, exercise, grooming, and health management.

Educational courses can be tailored to the specific needs of different types of pets, whether it be dogs, cats, reptiles, or birds. By doing so, prospective pet owners will gain the knowledge and skills necessary to provide a loving, stable, and nurturing environment for their future pets.

Countries like Germany have already seen success with similar programs, and the results are promising. In Germany, mandatory pet owner education has led to a decrease in animal shelter intakes and improved overall animal welfare. Integrating such courses into our pet purchase process will help mitigate the crisis faced by our animal shelters and improve the quality of life for countless pets.

Moreover, partnering with veterinarians, animal welfare organizations, and pet advocacy groups will ensure the courses are robust, current, and practical. These partnerships can aid in developing materials that are not only informative but also engaging and accessible to a diverse audience. Online courses can be bought by either franchises, or private breeders, or anyone in the business of selling animals for personal use. Each one will need a 100% passing rate before being allowed to distribute to potential consumers, and sell the animals they’re licensed to sell, which will also decrease instances of fraud, and animal abuse.

Let's work towards a future where every pet is a loved and cared-for member of the family. Sign this petition to urge lawmakers and policymakers to make educational courses a prerequisite for purchasing pets. Together, we can make a tangible difference in the lives of animals and the people who love them. Please sign the petition now and help us champion this cause for better-informed pet ownership in our nation.
