Require driver's licenses for all motorized bicycles

Require driver's licenses for all motorized bicycles
The Issue
Every day, I witness kids and adolescents zipping through our neighborhood on electric bikes and mini motorcycles, sometimes at perilous speeds. It’s a harrowing sight, especially when they do so without any regard for the safety of others or themselves. What's worse is not only the danger posed to them due to sheer lack of experience and control but also the reckless behavior they sometimes adopt, like throwing rocks at other children and neighbors just to create distractions so they can speed away unchallenged. It’s as if our streets have become a playground where the usual rules and safety norms don’t apply.
Given this rampant and distressing behavior, I firmly believe there’s an urgent need for new legislation requiring a driver's license for anyone operating electric bikes, mini motorcycles, and all motorized or artificially powered bikes. This change wouldn’t just promote safety; it would enforce a sense of responsibility among young riders. Without a proper licensing system, countless individuals—especially the most vulnerable, like children and elderly pedestrians—are at risk from those who don’t yet grasp the potential harm they could cause.
Statistically, there has been a significant rise in traffic accidents involving underage operators on these vehicles. Various local police reports detail incidents where young, unlicensed riders have caused collisions or injuries. Such data isn’t just numbers; it reflects real harm endured by real people in our communities. Countries that have implemented driver's license requirements for motorized bicycles have seen notable decreases in such incidents.
A driver's license requirement would entail riders getting at least minimal training and understanding of basic road rules, much like we demand of car drivers. This system ensures that they are well-versed in traffic regulations, know how to properly maneuver their vehicles, and comprehend the catastrophic consequences their actions can have. Such measures are not only proactive but necessary to build safer communities for everyone.
Let us come together to urge lawmakers to take this critical step in ensuring our children and adolescents are not only enjoying the freedom that comes with these exhilarating rides but are doing so in a way that values safety, respect, and responsibility. By mandating a driver's license for all motorized bikes, we’ll be taking a decisive stride towards safeguarding our streets and the people who use them.
