The Issue

Budget cuts should never come at the expense of our youngest children's safety. This year, at least four bus routes have ride times of over two hours, and some children now must transfer buses at a hub with no staff, no crossing guard, and no adult watching. Some of those children are only five years old.

Pre-K/K students cannot be expected to find the right bus, or recognize and respond to a stranger who approaches them. A registered Level 3 offender lives within a mile of this hub, and a gap in supervision this wide is exactly what puts children at risk. We aren't asking for a new program or more funding for anything but safety. We are asking the district to adopt one simple rule: no child below 2nd grade should ever navigate a bus transfer on their own.  Relying on the bus drivers inside the busses isn’t enough. At minimum a crossing guard should be present.

We are asking Liverpool CSD to adopt one simple rule: no child below 2nd grade should ever navigate a bus transfer on their own. Please sign this petition today. We need 1,800 signatures to be heard, and every name brings us closer to protecting these kids. The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children reports that unsupervised transfer points are a notable risk factor for school-age children.  This is for the kids.
