Require councils to manage new development infrastructure

The Issue

Purchasing a new-build property should be a dream fulfilled, a milestone of success. Yet, for countless homeowners, the reality is soured by unforeseen costs — estate maintenance or service fees that seem unjustified and skyrocket without notice.

I, like many others, was thrilled at the prospect of moving into a newly developed area. However, little did I know that the excitement would be overshadowed by fees purportedly fixed with the developer initially, but inevitably transferred to a management company. These companies often have free rein to hike fees well beyond what is reasonable. It's not just a financial concern but a breach of fairness.

Local councils should undertake the responsibility for roads and essential infrastructure associated with new build developments. Many homeowners, myself included, believe that the taxes we diligently pay should cover maintaining such communal necessities. It feels like we are being squeezed dry, paying over and over for services our taxes are meant to cover. Situations like these jeopardize the essence of homeownership, turning it into a predatory financial burden.

The requirement for homeowners to accept these fees should be abolished, and local authorities must accept responsibility for the infrastructure tied to new developments — both present and future. By banning estate maintenance or service fees, and ensuring that councils manage the necessary infrastructure, we can protect homeowners from being exploited under the guise of maintenance.

Isn't it time we demanded fairness and transparency for homeowners? Infrastructure management is a fundamental role of local governance, one that unequivocally ensures that taxes cover what they are truly meant to cover. We should not be forced into unjust payments — let's make a stand and demand better management practices.

Support this petition in urging local councils to take action and rightfully manage new development infrastructures. Together, we can push for a change that benefits current and future homeowners. Sign this petition to end exploitative service fees and call for fairer housing practices today!
