At New York Fashion Week on September 13, PETA supporters interrupted a COS runway show to protest how sheep are treated for wool. Video from the event shows a fashion executive pinning a protester to the floor and covering her mouth and nose, then shoving and grabbing another supporter who kept speaking up. The response to a peaceful protest about animal cruelty was more physical force.

The protest targeted a real problem in COS's supply chain. Investigators found sheep being kicked, dragged by their legs, and left with open shearing wounds at a wool operation that carried NATIVA certification, a label meant to signal responsible sourcing. That farm reportedly sold wool through a broker supplying H&M Group, COS's parent company, under the same "responsibly" sourced marketing. Across more than 150 wool operations investigated on four continents, abuse has turned up even at farms marketed as ethical.

Sheep are social, sensitive animals who panic when separated from their group, yet shearing crews are often paid by volume, creating pressure to work fast at the animals' expense. When sheep stop producing profitable wool, the industry sends them to slaughter. No certification label changes what happens to the animals behind it.

New York Fashion Week already banned fur from its runways after years of public pressure. Wool deserves the same reckoning, and COS and H&M Group should be the ones to lead it instead of resisting it with force.
