The Issue
I am writing this petition with a heavy heart. My beloved son was tragically struck and killed by a passing vehicle due to the absence of a continuous sidewalk in Cool Spring Township, Pennsylvania. Our family is devastated by the loss, and I am determined to prevent this kind of tragedy from happening to anyone else. The sidewalk, which abruptly ends at the township borough line, leaves pedestrians and cyclists vulnerable to traffic, particularly during nighttime when visibility is impaired due to inadequate street lighting.
The need for a safer pedestrian path is urgent, especially on both sides of the road, extending to the nearby stores where the existing sidewalk currently terminates. This is an area frequently used by residents, including many children and families. The lack of infrastructure poses an ongoing threat to anyone who walks or cycles in the area. Making matters worse, water runoff on this road creates slippery conditions and is eroding the ground near a residential property, further compounding the danger.
Statistically, pedestrian accidents are significantly higher in areas without proper sidewalks and lighting. According to the U.S. Department of Transportation, pedestrian fatalities are 70% more likely in areas lacking adequate sidewalks and lighting. Given these alarming statistics, immediate action is both necessary and justified.
Fortunately, we have potential contractors who are willing to extend the sidewalks promptly if given the go-ahead. These contractors are capable and ready to implement the needed changes as soon as possible. The project would not only prevent further tragedies but also enhance the overall safety and quality of life in the township for all residents.
I urge the Cool Spring Township and the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation to extend the sidewalks and add necessary street lighting. With community support, and understanding from the officials, we can implement these measures swiftly, and effectively prevent future accidents and save lives. Please join me in this crucial cause by signing this petition to make our community safer for everyone.
