Require Construction of a Comprehensive Homeless Shelter in Madera

The Issue

I am but one of many who have experienced homelessness in their lives in Madera. I understand firsthand the daily difficulties facing our homeless population. The need for a true comprehensive homeless shelter is an urgent one in our community–one which not only provides temporary housing, but also takes a holistic approach, offering drug and alcohol counseling, mental health services, job resources, and help in achieving long-term housing stability.

As of 2019, California had an estimated 151,278 people experiencing homelessness on any given day, as reported by Continuum of Care (CoC) to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). Our own Madera Region is part of this huge dilemma, not separate from it. Our neighbors, friends, and even family members might be bearing the brunt of this reality even as we speak.

A reality that becomes even more daunting when we consider that as per National Coalition for the Homeless, around 38% of homeless people are dependent on alcohol and 26% abuse other substances. With such widespread struggles with substance abuse, the ability for our homeless individuals to break free from the cycle becomes significantly more difficult.

Compassion, a recognition of shared humanity, and the inherent dignity of each individual must guide us as we tackle this problem. The development of a comprehensive homeless shelter in Madera is not simply a charity, it's an imperative social requirement. Let our voices echo as one, urging our governing bodies to take direct action in support of our less fortunate residents. By doing so, we not only uplift the lives of those directly affected, but also strengthen the entire societal fabric of Madera. The time to act is now.

Please, join this cause and sign this petition today to make Madera a place where all its residents can thrive.
