Require congressional and presidential speeches to be sworn into truthfulness

The Issue

the floor of the HOUSE

In today's political climate, the truth has become a casualty of partisan battles, leaving us as citizens often misled and misinformed. It deeply concerns me that our elected officials, those we have entrusted with the power to guide our nation, are not held accountable for the veracity of their public statements. This lack of accountability allows lies and misinformation to spread unchecked, eroding the public's trust and damaging our democracy.

Every time a member of Congress, the President, or their administration addresses us, we deserve to know the information we receive is the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth. Unfortunately, there are currently no guardrails to prevent our leaders from intentionally lying to the American people. Inconsistent and opaque statements can shape our policies and lives based on falsehoods, which should not be the standard for our governing bodies.

I propose that we require all public speeches and addresses by Congress, the President, or any official from the administration, including the press secretary, to be sworn in to tell the truth before delivering such addresses or speeches. This requirement would ensure these addresses, whether live or recorded, hold the same weight as testimonies provided under oath in a court of law. In the event they lie or intentionally misrepresent the truth, it should be actionable as lying to Congress or perjury, with appropriate consequences enforced.

There is precedence for truth-telling under oath within our justice system; we should extend this standard to our leaders when they speak to the nation. By implementing this measure, we can restore faith in our political institutions and reassure the public that the information they receive is accurate and trustworthy.

Let us create an environment where honesty and transparency are not just ideals, but mandatory practices upheld by our leaders. Join me in demanding accountability and integrity from our elected officials. Sign this petition to require all public speeches by Congress, the President, and his administration to be sworn into truthfulness. Together, we can bring change and ensure our nation's leaders are held accountable to the highest standards of truth.
