Our government must take responsibility for its actions. It is deeply unfair that millions of dedicated federal workers lose their pay during government shutdowns. Meanwhile, the very people who cause these shutdowns—members of Congress—keep receiving their paychecks. The people who are at fault for these shutdowns need to face the financial consequences that the people around them also face.

Government shutdowns are often the result of political disagreements, but they cause financial problems to the hardworking federal employees. Families struggle to pay rent, buy food, and cover basic needs—all because lawmakers can’t reach an agreement. If federal employees are forced to go without pay, then members of Congress should as well. 

Holding Congress accountable is a step toward change. If lawmakers felt the financial pressure they place on others, they might be more motivated to avoid shutdowns in the first place.
