Require Clear Labels for AI-Generated Content on Social Media in Canada

Require Clear Labels for AI-Generated Content on Social Media in Canada
The Issue
Petition to the Government of Canada
Artificial intelligence can now generate videos, images, voices, and news stories that look and sound completely real.
Canadians are being exposed every day to content that may be entirely fabricated — without knowing it.
On platforms like Facebook, YouTube, Instagram, and others, AI-generated material can be used to:
- Spread misinformation
- Impersonate real people
- Create fake endorsements
- Manipulate public opinion
- Run scams and fraudulent schemes
- Most viewers cannot reliably tell the difference between authentic content and AI-generated fabrications.
This is not about banning artificial intelligence. This is about transparency.
Just as we require food labels and financial disclosures, Canadians deserve clear, visible labeling when content has been generated or substantially altered by AI.
We call on the Government of Canada to:
- Pass legislation requiring social media platforms operating in Canada to clearly and prominently label AI-generated content.
- Establish uniform national standards for visible on-screen disclosures and embedded metadata.
- Require reasonable detection and reporting mechanisms by platforms.
- Impose meaningful penalties for companies that fail to comply.
AI is not going away. But deception should not be the price of innovation.
Canadians deserve to know what is real — and what is not.
Sign this petition to demand transparency and protect consumers, democracy, and digital trust in Canada.
