Require central air in MSU resident halls
Require central air in MSU resident halls
The Issue
Imagine living in an environment where the air feels thick as you breathe, where stepping outside is a relief even on a sweltering day because inside is unbearably hotter. This is the reality for many students and staff at Michigan State University's (MSU) resident halls. As a Resident Student Leader (RSL), I've witnessed the severe impact of extreme heat in these halls, including an incident where a resident had a severe medical emergency from the oppressive heat.
Resident halls are intended to be a safe and welcoming environment where students can thrive academically and socially. Unfortunately, without the presence of central air conditioning, these spaces become health hazards during warm months. The safety and well-being of MSU students should never be compromised, but right now, the lack of proper climate control poses a significant risk.
It's not just about comfort; it's about health. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), extreme heat can lead to serious health issues such as heat exhaustion or heat stroke, particularly in confined spaces. Young adults, especially those focused on academic pursuits, are especially vulnerable when indoor temperatures soar.
The solution is clear and attainable: installing central air conditioning in all resident halls at MSU. This would not only protect students from heat-related illnesses but also improve their quality of life and their ability to focus on their studies. With a comprehensive plan and adequate funding, this project can be successfully implemented, ensuring that all residents have access to a cool and safe living environment.
We call on MSU administration to prioritize the health and comfort of its students by taking immediate action to retrofit existing buildings with central air conditioning. This investment is crucial for the institution's commitment to student well-being and success. It’s time for MSU to lead by example and show that it places a high value on its community's health and safety.
Please sign this petition to advocate for central air conditioning in all MSU resident halls. Your support can make a significant difference in ensuring a safe and comfortable living environment for all students at Michigan State University. Together, we can bring about this much-needed change.
