The Issue

On August 26, 2026, my son, Saviour Menefee, came home from school with his braid ripped from his scalp and a bruise on his arm. As a mother, I was devastated and furious. Never once was I contacted about the situation which makes it even more devastating. This lack of transparency and accountability was unacceptable. It's not just about Saviour; numerous parents of special needs children have reported similar incidents, where their children return home injured, without any sufficient explanation from the school.

Special needs children may not always be able to communicate or express themselves effectively, which makes it extremely important for us—as parents and guardians—to know that our children are safe when we are not there to protect them. Surveillance cameras in classrooms could provide the evidence and insights needed for us to understand and trust that our children are being cared for appropriately. According to the National Center for Education Statistics, nearly 7 million children in the United States receive special education services. These vulnerable children deserve the utmost protection and careful monitoring.

It's essential to install cameras in special needs classrooms across the country to ensure that our children receive the safe and respectful treatment they deserve. Too often, incidents go unreported or are dismissed, leaving parents distraught and children scared. Installing cameras would not only act as a deterrent for any harmful behavior but also as a means to accurately document any issues and provide peace of mind to all parties involved.

The benefits far outweigh concerns about privacy when the wellbeing of our children is at stake. Schools and teachers would likely benefit from having access to this footage to understand and improve their teaching methods, manage conflicts more effectively, and ensure fair investigations are conducted if any concerns arise.

We call on the Department of Education and local education authorities to mandate the installation of surveillance cameras in all special needs classrooms. This step is crucial to protecting our children and holding schools accountable for their safety.

Please join us in calling for immediate action to install cameras and secure a safer, more transparent future for our children. Sign this petition and help us make our schools a better place for everyone.
