Require cameras and audio in veterinary consultations
The Issue
Losing a beloved pet is a heartbreaking experience, made worse when it results from potential veterinary misconduct or negligence. I know this pain all too well, having faced the devastating loss of my pet due to what I believe was a lack of professional care. Yet, when I sought answers, I was met with a lack of transparency and accountability. It is for this reason that I am calling for all veterinary practices to be required by law to have camera and audio recordings of consultations to help ensure the highest standards of care.
Currently, standard veterinary consultations do not mandate visual or audio documentation. This absence can result in miscommunications, malpractice, or even negligence going unchecked, leaving pet owners helpless and without recourse. According to the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS), malpractice claims in the UK have risen by 20% over the last five years. This indicates an urgent need for more accountability and transparency within the profession.
We propose that all consultations be recorded and stored as part of the pet's medical records. These recordings would offer invaluable evidence should there be any disputes over treatment or care. Moreover, they could serve as a helpful training resource for veterinary staff, potentially improving service standards across the board. With technology being readily available and affordable, implementing a recording system is both feasible and cost-effective.
The introduction of compulsory video and audio surveillance would not only safeguard pets but also instill greater confidence in pet owners about the level of care their animals receive. It is also an opportunity for veterinary practices to demonstrate their commitment to transparency and high ethical standards.
We are calling on the Veterinary Medicines Directorate and related authorities to make it mandatory for all UK veterinary practices to install and utilize camera and audio recording systems during consultations. Let us take this necessary step to ensure the safety and well-being of our pets, as well as to maintain the integrity of the veterinary profession.
Please sign this petition to demand action that will protect and promote the welfare of our cherished animal companions.
